Cepheid, a company based in Sunnyvale, California, received approval from Health Canada to offer its newly developed test for the rapid detection of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA, typically Methicillin-sensitive) in skin and soft tissue infections. The test, called "Xpert(TM) MRSA/SA Skin and Soft Tissue (SSTI)", will enable doctors and hospitals to diagnose MRSA within approximately one hour of taking the sample. This drastic reduction in the time it takes to diagnose MRSA will help the physician prescribe the right treatment and save numerous lives. A new study, to be published in the December 2008 issue of the American Journal of Infection Control, reveals that more than 250,000 Canadian patients experience infections from antibiotic resistant organisms while in the hospital each year and, since 1999, rates of MRSA have more than doubled.
